Deck Doctor #2 - Dark Magician Deck xD

Hey guys, welcome to deck doctor. My goal here is to try and help you make your deck more consistent while at the same time, trying to keep the spirit of the original build. My card choices will be based on the deck creator's ability to obtain the cards, playability, and keeping within the creator's playstyle. Let's take a look at tonight's build from RodyVF

Hey dubK, ive been watching most of your videos lately, wanted to say congratulations on having such an awesome collection so far and so many viewers.
Im building a deck and i need some suggestions or help on making it better. Basically its my main deck which i use to play with my friends but i want to make it better so i can start going to local tournaments.
Its a Dark Magician deck; spellcasters are my favorite type of monsters so im trying to build a Dark Magician deck and working on getting some cards for a spell counter deck.

Here's my decklist as it is right now:

Monsters:
Dark Eradicartor Warlock
Dark Magician x3
Skilled Dark Magician x3
Gemini Elf x3
Breaker the Magical Warrior x2
Crystal Seer
Kycoo The Ghost Destroyer
Old Vindictive Magician
Gorz the Emissary of Darkness

Spells:
Heavy Storm
Mystical Space Typhoon
Dark Magic Attack
Book of Moon
Lightning Vortex
Brain Control
Swords of Revealing Light
Magical Dimension x2
Summoner's Art
Ancient Rules

Traps:
Mirror Force
Call of the Haunted
Torrential Tribute
Magic Cylinder
Dark Bribe
Magician's Circle x2
Birthright x2
Reckless Greed x3
----------------------------------------

I have the Spellcaster's command struture deck, so i have other spellcasters that may help in this deck, i also traded cards today and i got:

Anciant Rules
Upstart Goblin x2
The Dark Creator
Magical Exemplar
Witch of the Black Rose
Flamvell Magician x2
Night's End Sorcerer
Frequency Magician x3
Pot of Avarice

I think some of those cards may help my deck, i also have other spellcasters in my binder which may help, like:

Jester Confit
Sorcerer of Dark Magic x2
Chaos Command Magician x2
Diffusion Wave-Motion

Im trying to get Dark Magician Girl and "Secret Village of the Spellcasters" to add to the deck.

Please reply ASAP, i want to make this deck better so i can go to local tournaments on saturdays.

Thank you for your time.

- Rody

Dark Magician decks are always so fun to use, but due to the fact that it's a 2 tribute with only 2500 atk, it doesn't stand a chance against synchros or even Caius for that matter.  I'm going to see what kind of "magic" I can work to make this as competitive as possible.  Lets start with all of the cards that I'm going to cut:

- Gemini Elf x 3
- Skilled Dark Magician x 3

I cut these monsters because although they are favorite spellcasters of many people they are not very effective at doing anything in an competitive environment.  I know that the purist are gonna get upset, but I ask this, do you wanna win using good cards or do you wanna lose using bad cards?  Simple beatdown does not win tournaments, PERIOD.

- Dark Magic Attack
- Swords of Revealing Light
- Lightning Vortex

Dark Magic Attack is just way too situational, so it has to go.  Swords and Vortex are really unneeded at this point.  We can hardly afford the discard with Vortex and Swords is really trash now because many people maindeck Dust Tornadoes.

- Magic Cylinder
- Dark Bribe
- Magician's Circle x2
- Birthright x2
- Reckless Greed x3

Cylinder gets smashed by dust tornado and If i'm going to run risky cards, I want the rewards to be worth the risk.  Birthright and Magician's Circle are situational and by now, you should know that I don't like situational cards in an competitive environment unless they are game changing.  Neither of these cards are.  Finally, I have to remind people that Reckless Greed is not an independent draw engine.  It is only good when you can activate more than one at a time or at the very least recur them with Mask of Darkness.
This deck can many directions since we have cut so much of the "Fat" from the deck.  I want to run at least one Eradicator Warlock.  Even though it is the epitome of situational, we are going to add some cards to mitigate that problem and see if we can BURN the opponent before he gets a chance to mount a counter offensive.

****PURIST ALERT****
A deck can still be called a Monarch, Spellcaster, Beast or whatever if a majority of the deck is based around a particular theme or combo.  Onto business!

Monsters: 18

1| Dark Eradicator Warlock
3| Dark Magician
1| Dark Armed Dragon
1| Gorz, Emissary of Darkness
1| Tragoedia
1| Dark Grepher
2| Armageddon Knight
1| Necro Gardna
1| Sangan
1| Morphing Jar
1| Plaguespreader Zombie
3| Gravekeeper's Spy
1| Gravekeeper's Descendant

Spells: 12

3| Swing of Memories
1| Brain Control
2| Gold Sarcophagus
1| Allure of Darkness
1| Card Destruction
1| Heavy Storm
1| Giant Trunade
1| Mystical Space Typhoon
1| My Body as a Shield

Traps: 10

1| Starlight Road
1| Torrential Tribute
1| Mirror Force
1| Call of the Haunted
2| Bottomless Traphole
2| Dimensional Prison
1| Solemn Judgment

If you take a close look at this deck, it aims to do one thing.  Dump Dark Magician, recur it, and put big hurt on the field fast!  There are 10 normal spells to abuse Eradicator's effect with while at the same time serving a solid purpose for the deck.  Running burn is not optimal because you will simply empty your hand to fast and not be able to mount a comeback against most decks.  So instead we can play the set up game with Armageddon Knight and Dark Grepher, dumping DM to the grave so that we can set up major plays in the following turns.  The deck also contains standard protection because we are not always going to be able to do all of our fancy combos.  I decided to include Gorz and Trago because the deck is prone to bad hands and those guys will help you mount an offense if you get clogged with vanillas.  Further mitigating bad hands are MJar and Card Destruction.  This could easily win a casual tournament just by the nature of summoning big 2500 monsters to the field and then Plopping down Dark Armed Dragon to clear the way to victory.

Hope you liked the fixes, if you would like your deck fixed, send a PM to my youtube channel.

  5. when you think about it dark magician is a good card in the right deck and with the right side deck you can easily win tournaments with cards like cost down and ancient rules work really well but dubkdad is right because with out these cards dark magician would be a 2 trib 2500 attack but with mystic plasma zone he becomes a 3000 and with solidarity it is even higher so you know guys don't rule out dark magician straight up as useless but im not saying don't listen to dubkdad either he is a good player and he thinks this website is proof of that it is always good to get the opinion of an experienced duelist dubkdad is cool and he has my vote as a trusted duelist

  6. I'm happy to see that you followed up on a dark magician deck. I've long been using the dark magician turbo deck that you made a while back and while the concept is extremely fun, a competitive build is a nice turn of events.
